Read the letter in full

On 28 January 2024, Canadian Lawyers for International Human Rights (CLAIHR), Al-Haq, and two individuals jointly sent a letter to the Minister of Foreign Affairs urgently requesting information on Canada’s export approvals of military goods or technology to or destined for Israel and that any permits issued after 7 October 2023 be cancelled.

The letter argues that the Export and Import Permits Act (EIPA) prevents Canada from issuing permits to Canadian companies to export military goods and technology to Israel due to the substantial risk that they could be used to commit serious violations of international law and serious acts of violence against women and children.

The letter asked that The Minister provide a full response on the measures taken to comply with the state’s legal obligations as well as informaiton on permits issued for the brokering or exporting of military goods or technology transferred to Israel since 7 October 2023. The Minister did not respond to the letter.
